Nothing says holidays like a sweet treat baked with love. Here’s someways you can decorate cookies that look fancy but aren’t as hard as they seem. We used a simple sugar cookie recipe but you could get creative with any kind of cutout cookie. Maybe make them chocolate? Add a different extract? The possibilities are endless!

1. Simple Sprinkles: This one is easy. Make your sugar cookie dough, cut out your shapes and add fun holiday themed sprinkles before baking.

2. Pinwheel: Make your sugar cookie dough as you normally would. Split dough and use food coloring to dye the dough. We left one plain and used red food coloring for the second dough. After refrigerating, roll both doughs out so that they are the same size and thickness. Layer on top of each other. Use the rolling pin again over the top of both of them and then roll the dough up like you would making cinnamon rolls. Slice and bake!

3.Marble Cookies: You will more than likely have extra dough left over after making pinwheels. If you combine these two doughs and roll them out you will get a fun maybe effect. Cut out shapes and bake according to your recipe.

Now on to icing options:

That simple sugar cookie recipe can be transformed just by adding a little icing. Two favorites are buttercream and royal icing.

Buttercream : Make your buttercream according to this recipe (or purchase a ready-made Buttercream Icing). Add food coloring if you’d like. You can spread it on and add sprinkles or get super creative and make different textures. If you go this route be aware they are not good for stacking. These would be great for a holiday cookie tray or just enjoying at home.

Bonus! You could stack two cookies together for a cookie sandwich!

Royal Icing Option: Royal icing can be intimidating but it doesn’t have to be (you can purchase a ready-made Royal Icing). The best part about royal icing is that it dries hard so you can stack them without fear of them sticking together or smudging.

Outline the cookie and then flood the inside.

We used sprinkles for our first design and swirled another color in our second.

Whatever decorations you chose will be a sweet addition to the holiday. Test out a few of these cookie ideas but remember to have fun with it. No one really cares what a cookie looks like as long as they get to eat something delicious in the end!
